FTL: Aftershock
Juggernaut
The vid screen displays the news, the usual stories. Piracy in quadrant 5z is at an all time high, video of the rebel flagship destroying another Federation fleet, stock prices, fuel prices, and then, suddenly, the screen goes blank. People walking by stop and point, whispering amongst themselves. For years, this screen in the middle of this city, on this planet, had been lit up non stop. Then as people start to walk away, a face appears.
A voice from off screen speaks. "Sir, you are go, we have full control."
The man, older, with haunted eyes, fully faces the screen. Artificial light illuminates his face, likely making him appear older than he is. Behind him, the black back drop could be dark space, or just a curtain. The screen shows just enough of his shoulders and his collar for people to be able to see the military jacket and the medals pinned to his chest. This is General Alket, highest surviving general of the Rebel Blitz. His eyes move around, almost as if he can see each person through the screen, then he speaks.
"Citizens... you are being lied to. The propaganda flooding the info-net would have you believe that the Federation is all but defeated. That we cower in fear, simply running for survival. I assure you, good people, this is far from the truth! The federation is alive, and well!"
The live stream cuts to the destruction of an enormous ship, which could only be the Rebel flagship, then returns to the General's face. At this point, armed rebel guards begin appearing, setting up a ring around the screen, trying to force people to move along. The crowd surges against them.
"Less than seven galactic days ago, a federation ship bearing crippling recon information against the rebel fleet destroyed the Rebel flagship. They are weaker now than ever they were! We are the Federation! We are not children playing at war! We are men and women fighting for your freedom! For all our freedom!"
The crowd, which was nearly double the size it had been when it started, began cheering in response to the words. The guards redoubled their effort to move along the populace, but the crowd was too big, and continued to push against them.
"So I say to you, have hope. And don't give up. Because we are The Federation. We are a juggernaut. And We! Will! Not! Be! STOPPED!!!"
The screen goes black again, and then a few seconds later it returns to the news, where the two newscasters sit, staring in confusion at the camera. The crowd below continues cheering raucously, their excitement ignited by the General's speech.
The war was about to begin.
A continuation of he bare story offered by the app FTL. The federation and the Rebels both lay claim to the ruling of the galaxy. A secret federation ship has recently delivered crucial data to the federation base, destroying the rebel's super cruiser flagship in the process. After this defeat, the rebels have halted their advances in order to regroup, giving the federation time to regroup and bolster their forces as well.
As things stand, the Rebels and the Federation stand at roughly equal power. The pirates and mercenaries of the galaxy are still conducting business as usual and the Zoltan, a notoriously peace-loving race is lobbying for a non-violent solution.
